Letter of Introduction

My science major is biology and my career goals are to go into the medical field and be a physician. I like to write only when I’m journaling, I also journal only during times of anger or distress to help me vent and process my feelings. I don’t necessarily dislike writing but find it tedious due to the courses and extensive assignments I have had over the past years. I consider science writing to be difficult at certain times when trying to express data in a manner that isn’t purely logistic. Additionally, it can also be quite difficult to connect the science information while keeping everything organized. The difficulty of science writing can also become annoying at times due to how content and data-heavy the writing piece can be. Although my major and intended career requires much more writing in the future, my past experiences have led me to not be so fond of writing unless I know it must be done.

When deciphering science texts, it can be complex due to the need for background information or a certain level of understanding to be able to process the data and information provided. However, the level of complexity increases when the level of education decreases because the higher the level of education a person has, the more resources they are bound to receive pertaining to science texts and comprehending them. There are exceptions such as people who have had exposure and gained resources outside of having a higher education or if the higher education a person received was not science-based. For example, my parents both received their master’s degree but to this day they still ask my siblings and me for help when medical reports or papers are given to them. Some of the challenges included not knowing a lot of the medical terms used but searching up the meanings and doing some research has helped me to further understand the terms while also being able to provide my parents with a better understanding of the reports given to them. Moving forward, I would probably resort to conversing about the reports with their doctors first to ensure that I understand the information correctly but if the option to converse with a doctor is unavailable, I will continue to search up terms and do research to provide my parents with the best understanding that I can provide.

If I had to communicate a crucial science-related issue to the community I live in, there would be many factors I would have to take into consideration. Firstly, language would be an issue because I would have to translate English to Bangla for the majority of my community members, especially most of the adults and elders. Although I am bilingual, certain terms are very difficult to translate into a different language so this would present as a great challenge. Education would not be much of an issue because most of our community members have received an education and have somewhat of a basic understanding of science. The best way to present the science-related issue to my community would have to be through a form of video content because alongside the message being provided, hearing a fellow member present aids in comprehension.

A flaw in my writing would be the word choice when I am writing because although I am able to write down my thoughts and intended message, I still find it difficult to find the words that would best present my thoughts. Revising and editing have helped me to organize and rephrase many of the areas in my writing that could use improvement, but it is still a flaw of mine when it comes to writing. From this writing about science class, I wish to improve on how to effectively write for my science classes without sounding redundant but also clearly presenting the intended meaning I have in my head. Standard American English (SAE) is used for much of our writing including most of our science writings and I find that it can make it both accessible and inaccessible to the public, but I do not believe that SAE makes science writing more accessible to the general public. Although SAE is a form of language that is seen as the standard language in this country, various communities use different dialects of the English language and this may limit those communities understanding of science writing due to SAE. Those who are accustomed to SAE are likely to understand it better than those of a different dialect and this is a challenge because language plays a vital role in portraying specific meanings.

Sustainability is the process that focuses on conserving the resources we have to be able to protect and preserve our planet. I know that sustainability has to do with much of the natural resources we have being used up at greater rates than before which are resulting in harmful consequences that must be dealt with. However, sustainability refers to various areas and can be used to help maintain a system regardless of the field. Sustainability impacts my daily life because if our environment did not have a system to help protect it, I would most likely be suffering due to my respiratory issues being worsened. Furthermore, the sustainability of healthcare allows me to be ensured that I am being taken care of properly and that if I am not, there are ways to go about that issue if it were to arise, but it is the certainty of knowing that a system is in place that helps. Sustainability is all around me in various aspects of my life providing a system that allows for my life to function in the ways that it has thus far.
